Standard USB uses 4 pins
1) VCC
2) D-
3) D+
4) Gnd

In your pic, D- and D+ goes to the Choke1,(find vcc and follow the order)
Use a multimeter to find out Gnd and VCC in L1 and L2
(L1 seems to be vcc, check if L2 is Gnd)
The fifth pin may be ID.

Recheck again before you plug it to USB port.
Better still, connect only the pcb( without the HDD) and check,
and connect the HDD later.

If you are not sure,on this case, take help from pcimage as suggested by mr_spokk

Good approach, sathyan :good: although my opinion on the pinout is slightly different to yours. If we had a clear photo, it would be easier, wouldn't it :)

So this could be wrong, due to the detail obscured by the fuzziness of the photo, but my opinion (based on that regulator, U2, likely being the typical LM1117 or equivalent) is that listing from the top of the connector in the photo, the pins are:

Vbus
Gnd
D+ or -
D+ or -
Cable shield

That's For sure ...

Vbus
Gnd
D+ or -
D+ or -
Cable shield

In that case L2 is Vbus and L1 should show Gnd(Check with multimeter and confirm).
And D- and D+ to be found by trial and error (two combinations)

@ ritch50
Always , verify again , Vbus and Gnd, as Vulcan suggested,
it shouldn't be difficult,
Be sure Before plugging it in USB port.

@ Vulcan
Thanks :)

FYI that board is a USB interface board already! It's just that the OP has not received the USB cable, which is attached to the external plastic case on these drives. There is no attempt to "convert" this to a USB drive - that is how it is sold by Asus, using that board. :)

Of course depending on the actual drive problem (not specified by the OP), then I agree using the drive's native interface may be more successful, and so your service may be useful - but that still does not mean anyone is "playing with that board to convert it to usb" as you said. ;)

Table 8 in section 4.1 has the pinout for the "40-way ZIF (IDE interface) connector".

My take on Vulcan's and sathyan's discussion is ...

LM1117.gif
LM1117.gif (5.63 KiB) Viewed 8184 times

If you can identify the markings on the bridge IC, then we may be able to identify the order of Data+ and Data-.
