WHARE IS ROM IC?

March 30th, 2013, 16:23

Hi Everyone

Model : ST3160215AS
P/N : 9CY112-313
FIRMWARE : 4.AAB
received the customer from not working (dead condition)
unscrew the pcb but not find out the ROM IC
same mode, p/n, & firmware is my hand - that's available in ROM IN.

I don't think so. That looks like the PWM controller for the negative preamp supply. The adjacent coil is the clue that it is part of a switchmode supply.

What are the markings on the IC?

See my HDD IC database:
http://community.wdc.com/t5/Desktop-Por ... d-p/523950

I suspect that the MCU has embedded ROM, and that the vacant location at the top left of the PCB is reserved for an external flash memory.

If you would like to measure some voltages, I believe these are the Vcore and Vio test points.

however looks like somebody worked on it :)

Actually, the IC could be a FETKY (MOSFET plus Schottky diode). The PWM control would then come from the motor controller.

Thank for all replays,

i bought it customer from dead condition & i connect system immediate shutdown.
so remove it 2 TVS diodes.
After remove diodes connect system - SYSTEM ON
but not response in pcb & media.
so immediate got DONOR PCB (same model, p/n, firmware & pcb no), but i can't find out ROM IC.

fzabkar, what is that problem in defective PCB

Thank you for advance...

Which diode was shorted?

Did the drive spin up with either board?

What are the voltages at the Vio and Vcore test points?

Your drive should work with the donor PCB if your description is 100% accurate.

I guess Original ROM is missing. You should ask if he took the drive to someone else before u.

12V diode shorted , remove it & power on

yes, donar pcb connect in defective drive - spin up

i don't idea, how will measure VIO & VCORE.

I agree !
ROM IC should be here :

(Unless PCB have MASKED ROM on MCU).
I think that someone might have taken the ROM IC.

The ROM's support components (pullup resistors, supply bypass capacitor) are not populated. Therefore, AISI, the board has no ROM.

labtech is saying that a matching donor PCB (same firmware) should work without a ROM transfer.

A shorted 12V diode suggests that the board sustained an overvoltage on the 12V supply. AISI this is unlikely to have damaged the preamp, unless you have done something to it by incorrectly replacing the FETKY for the preamp's negative supply.

As for measuring the Vcore and Vio voltages, you need to learn how to use a multimeter. In any case it will probably only be a post mortem exercise to determine the extent of the original fault.

Dear Friend Aravind

Your drive Is Seagate 7200.10 160GB Sata
Model : ST3160215AS And Firmware Is 4.AAB
There Is No Mask Rom In This Drive I Am 100% Sure Bcoz I Allready Have More Then 8 to 10 Drive This Model.
So I Check Some Drive But There Is ROM In Almost All Drives That I Checked.
You R Lucky For Swap PCB Directly If You Know How To Find Donor. Its Easy DIY if In Your Drive Have No Physical Problem Related To Head Or Other Internal Issue.
Just Find The Same Model,Serial,Sitecode,And Possible To Nearest Date Code.
Your Drive Directly Work With Donor Pcb 100% Sure.

Your Friend
Jignesh :)

ISTM that you are not 100% sure.

BTW even those MCUs which have external flash memory still need some internal code (mask ROM) in order to run in "kernel mode".

The following board looks similar but has an LSI MCU. It comes in "with ROM" and "without ROM" versions.
