Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts
April 2nd, 2013, 4:00
One PC crashed (HDD & DATA OK).
The user needs to access data from a regular PC.
As I never worked with SAS/SCSI drives, that's why I need some information regarding these who has experience.
Is there any converter exist for connecting these HDD to a regular Desktop SATA Port?
Is there any RAID card required for mounting these drives?
Is there any tweaking required for accessing data?
Any advice regarding this issue will be appreciated.

You would need a SAS Host Bus Adaptor. Search Google for 'SAS HBA'

thx for the reply.
Drives were connected to HP Integrated Smart Array P410i/256MB Controller in HP SERVER ML350T
SAS HBA contains multi port? As 2 HDDs were connected to the Server
And, do I need to re-config or something to mound data? or will it be directly accessible?

There is no such Plug-n-Play but as always Plug-n-Pray
good luck

It's not my expectation if it's PLUG N PLAY and I don't expect also, To clarify, I need to know if these are or not!

Anyway, is it possible to make clone to regular SATA HDD by using SAS HBA
for SOURCE: SAS HDD to HBA & to DESTINATION SATA HDD to REGULAR SATA PORT?

with HBA should be directly accessible, no configuring needed.
Also, SAS HBA will allow connecting of SATA devices so you could clone SAS to SATA with both attached to HBA

Thanks, do you have any recommendation on SAS HBA?

I have LSI controllers like this one SAS3041E-R. Also I have some adaptec controller also, not sure of model for adaptec card I have

Shahij, the ML350 IS actually a SERVER product so 99999999,9999% you have RAIDed array. BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL with it and when handling the disks, as if you destroy metadata or recklessly tinker with the array it is much more complicated to get out of troubles. Likely they are the 300 GB.

Hi Shahij,
You problabyi need a PCI-X HBA or maybe an PCI-e HBA. I work with same HP ML350
But as say BackST

Thanks, searching one locally if available.

Yes, it's RAIDed
Is there any chance the disk info modified while booting up with the CARD only?
Logically I don't think so. If it would be then how would be make further analysis through WinHex or other application? Correct me if I am wrong.

I will be careful for sure.

It depends on HOW and WHERE you boot it up. For sure it is unsafe to directly connect to XP / 7 systems.
If you really want to do something, CLONE the drives onto other and then , externally, rebuild the array and collect data (and good luck !)
Otherwise, if you are not familiar with SAS , with HP ProLiant and associated RAID, it's better either to decline the job OR outsource , rather than having a complete mess.

And again, what RAID level was used?
Don't do anything with original drives, except cloning them sector by sector.
Sure, you will need to find some RAID reconstruction software, if RAID level was not a "mirror".

Don't worry my friend! I learned to avoid further data loss at least in last couples of years.

boot the server from usb or other sata hdd. ML350 has sata port for the dvd. you can use that sata port. Install P410i/256MB drivers.
Copy the data
Of course if the server works, if not image the hdd to sata then play with them. Hopefully is a raid 1
