WD Caviar SE WD5000AAKS-07YGA0 (burned pcb - embedded ROM)

April 29th, 2013, 8:46

Hello, my friend has WD Caviar SE hdd WD5000AAKS-07YGA0, with totally burned pcb since 2 years.
Also Marvell chip is burned.

Pcb is 2060-701477-002 (sticker 2061-701477-900 AE) with mcu Marvell 88i6745-tfj1 but no flash rom chip
(firmware is embedded into mcu Marvell chip).

I found a good pcb replacement, motor spins but with head clicking.
In WDR i did the "repair" flash in "Flash operations" but i get only error 3701=FM_ERR_DIR on read MODs 102-103-104-105-106-107.
I can't access to SA in module operations.

I was able to read and backup ROM, but not the SA.

Can you help me to flash the ROM with the good adptives?
Thanks

After 2 years data it's not so important for my friend anymore, but would be happy to see some of the data in this drive after 2 long years (to whom he had given up psychologically for a long time).
What are this two things that may fix it?

I'll consider your suggestions and I will think about before try them, in the meantime i will see what are the tips of the PROs to fix the adaptives in rom.
Maybe it's possible to do adptives manually with Hex Editor, but I don't know what to manipulate!

This is ROYL...

Can you read any mods from SA? Could be better to establish SA version before messing too much with it. also would be useful to get backup of SA

I can't read SA.
I can see only few mods by "enumeration" but if i try to read them i get error.
The only enumerated mods which i'm able to read (backup) are those in the rom + mod 20 (smart) but with bad CRC

The "good" PCB, is it from drive model WD5000AAKS-xxYGxx ?

The seller says it is.
Do you suspect that he selled me a pcb with the same chassis number but with a rom of another type of drive?

It's possible of course.

Try writing a ROM from the same family drive and see if it still clicks.

If it does, then you have more serious issues. (i.e. heads and/or preamp)

I didn't find it!

MOD 20 often has a bad checksum on good drives. Could we see it? I could extract the SMART data for you, FWIW.

Could we see the damaged PCB? That might tell us a bit about the problem. Did you check which, if any, of the TVS diodes were damaged?

As for a damaged preamp, if you can read MOD 20, wouldn't that largely discount the preamp as a culprit?

In the original pcb there isn't much to see.
The only visible signs are signs of burning on 5V TVS diode and on the SMOOTH chip.
MCU is shorted (checked all around it with multimeter), but not with visible damage

"MOD 20" is unintelligible. I doubt that it was retrieved from the SA.

The damage to the SMOOTH chip might point to the section of circuitry that was affected. For example, if the negative preamp supply were damaged, then that would suggest that the preamp may be dead. Moreover, if the zero-ohm resistor that is associated with the 5V TVS diode is open, then this would also point to a damaged preamp.

Do you know if there is a way to confirm the death of the preamp with multimeter?

If the preamp were shorted, then a multimeter would be able to measure it. That said, a shorted preamp wouldn't allow the PCB to power up. As for other kinds of damage, one thing you could do would be to compare the voltages at the R/W differential pairs and the I2C pins against a known good preamp with the drive powered on. The drive wouldn't need to be spinning.

Otherwise I have an idea that involves communicating with the preamp via its I2C pins, but that would require a bit of setting up and some experimentation.

You could use this free hardware and software tool to access the registers in I2C devices:
http://web.archive.org/web/200605110132 ... iicuni.rar

That said, perhaps your own software can interrogate the preamp.

Here you go, 192Kb ROM file from exact same model....

I looked the schematic, there is 74L05 IC which should have inside 6 logical TTL NOT PORT.
http://www.ece.usu.edu/ece_store/spec/74LS05.pdf

If i'm correct i should have one of these logical integrated circuit in some place at home, kept from old school days :D
I can build the circuit.

Does it work on all hard drives?

Thank you pcimage, i flashed with your ROM but i still have exactly the same problem.
WDR reports that your rom version is 58.7UD, instead the rom of the purchased pcb is 58.AFD.

Maybe the purchased pcb is from a totally different family then my drive, could be this?

58.AFD is a valid FW version for a Tornado 2R drive (which this drive is)

You have a bad preamp and/or suspect heads, assuming your purchased PCB works.

Hi Michael, I've got a similar working drive on my desk:

MDL: WD5000AAKS-00YGA0
PWB: 2060-701444-004 Rev A

Date: 08 DEC 2007
Product of Thailand

I've seen that you are from Italy like me... I'm just a beginner but if you need something, like the firmware dump or SA I can try to get them from the drive for you. If we are near I could also borrow you my board! :)

Best Regards
Paolo

AFAICT, the circuit is designed to communicate with +5V components via an industry standard Philips I2C bus. So as long as you can identify the correct pins (clock/data), then you should be able to read the chip's registers. That will still only verify the preamp's digital logic, not its analogue section, so it won't be a complete test.

You can get an idea how the preamp works from one or more datasheets here:

Grazie Paolo,
