Two days old, has not been dropped
SS cable into 3.0 USB port
Tried in two PC's, both in normal/high performance power mode

Hi,

Had this HDD for two days with no problems, went to use it last night and it made 5/6 high pitched beeping tones before falling silent. The LED on the front flashes constantly, when the drive it worked it was steady.

Ran Seatools and it does not appear.

I don't believe the drive is spinning, at least not at proper RPM.

I've tried four different recovery programmes and it does not show up in any.


It's two days old and holds all of my data, as I was using it to store my files while I formatted my laptop and reinstalled Windows 8, which I have not yet been able to do thanks to this drive.


From research I've done it seems that 'stuck' actuators are not uncommon with SG drives lately, which could be the culprit...could anyone please advise me on how to proceed?

If the drive is not spinning at all (which fits with the "beeping" sounds that you mention), and if the drive has not been dropped / shocked at all, then this sounds most likely to be "stiction".

That is normal for a drive which isn't spinning.

My personal advice is that if (as it sounds in your case) the data is valuable, then for that type of problem there is nothing low-risk which you can do yourself - the lowest-risk option is expert attention in a cleanroom. If the problem is only stiction, and if the heads / platters have not been damaged as a result, then an experienced professional has a good chance of recovering the data.

There are some professional members of the board in the Middle East (if you didn't want to ship the drive very far) - hopefully other members will be able to give you recommendations. Of course there are additional professional members in Europe, if shipping isn't a problem. Good luck!

Try to remove the drive from the enclosure and connect directly to the SATA port, or at least to a power supply and see if it spins ok. DO NOT OPEN THE DRIVE.
If you don't want to send the drive to a pro the first thing to do is to make sure that the problem is indeed with the drive and not woith the enclosure.

This is 2,5" drive , and described sounds, mentioned by OP, exactly means (99%) physical issue with drive , sticking or so.

Hi, I would go back to the laptop and check if there is any data available using recovery software if necessary.
