Can my data still be recovered without U12 chip?

June 17th, 2013, 2:13

I connected a wrong power supply to my 2TB western digital my passport drive. Consequently, the pcb board got shorted and stopped powering up. I tried DIY techniques replacing the patient board with an identical donor board along with U12 swap but it didn't help. I think U12 chip also got shorted. I was wondering if my data can still be recovered? How much would it cost?

Any decent DR company should handle this case. ;)

The ROM is not specifically unique to your HDD, but to find a compatible replacement the revision of the drives firmware at the service area must be known. This requires work in itself, and also this is assuming the damage does not extend beyond the PCB.

Also, this model will be with encryption and your DIY efforts would not have helped at all.

You need to contact a professional and get your case looked at before you get a realistic idea of the price.

And what about overlay matching, head map variations, heads microjog settings, SA bads, MR bias settings and so on? :)
This is all unique, and lives in ROM.

It is a new thread of already existing topic, already answered.

If it is the same case, preamp is fried so it's definitely not DIY.

P.S. N.C. ..... how long !!! Welcome back, my friend :D

Op asked if his case can be recovered without original ROM. The answer is yes. So despite what you say, ROM can be specifically unique to its HDD but not unique in the sense that it is irreplaceable preventing recovery :D
