Unlock Seagate Momentus 5400.2

July 5th, 2013, 9:49

This drive was in a PS3. It has become locked. I need some way to remove the ATA password. I think only the user password has been changed and not the master, but I can't be 100% sure. This is all new to me, so I have found a lot of options but a lot of it seems tailored to drives from other manufacturers. I want to recover the data. If I cannot recover the data then I don't care about the drive.

What are my best options? I have looked at Repair Station, but I am not sure if it will work with this drive, and when I try to hook it up to a system to check, the system attempts to boot from the locked drive instead of its own drive.

Sorry if these are dumb questions. I really have been trying to do a lot of research, but this is such an intricate topic and I really don't want to proceed with anything until I know enough to not break anything.

Thanks

Repair Station doesn't support 2.5" drives.

iDriveRepair supports those but not 5400.2, only 5400.1

Same thing with HDD Unlock:

Try to check BIOS settings to set the other drive to boot up before the locked one and try Repair Station first of all.

Other option is to contact a DR Pro to analyze it for you.

I might be missing something stupid, but I can't seem to get to the BIOS before the system asks for the drive lock password, even when I hammer on F10 from the moment I hit the power button.

And for your computer is really F10?
I've also seen some cases where keyboard is not working directly after power on. Try to reset and then try again BIOS keys.
Another option is to boot up windows and then connect the hard drive when windows is already running. Of course this a bit more dangerous if you're unexperienced.

If the drive is actually locked, the PC will try to boot normally, but it simply cannot. Locked drives (unless there's something else) DO identify correctly and at POST that's all.

I haven't checked if there are BIOSes that detect ATA password is needed and ask for it - one thing is BIOS supervisor password another one is ATA. For sure some DO use supervisor password to ATA-lock the disk.
