If you use a properly working USB device ( stick or hdd ) it will be detected
automatically in Windows and at least a drive letter is asigned for it (no matter
whether its formated or not).

There is no need to install manually any additional driver for usb.

If by any circumstance a properly working usb device is not formated, it should
be possible to format it with the standard Windows tools - or with an add on tool
which is a little bit simpler to use

the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool:

http://download.cnet.com/HP-USB-Disk-St ... 74082.html

If neither of these option works, then your usb connection might be faulty.

I totally agree with falther.
Also, if your usb connection are faulty it could damage your drive.
If usb connection on your computer are really faulty, you should change motherboard.

Re: hallo i need help please

@falther,

FYI the driver mentioned by the OP is a DOS driver, and I suspect the OP is using DOS. I guess he may be trying to get his external (USB?) WD drive to be recognised in DOS - perhaps to use MHDD? I'm not sure that he is trying to install a USB driver for use by Windows, which would be incorrect as you say.

However since there is insufficient information about why the OP is asking these questions, or what their actual objective is, I could be wrong. The missing information / translation problems are just too large. :(

Hi,

Have you checked in BIOS that it DOES support booting from USB?
What might be beneficial is to first update your BIOS to latest version.
Go through your BIOS by pressing F2, F10 or DEL or whatever and see what settings are there for USB and booting.

That info would have been good at the start, and also the exact model of your laptop.

Does it have a CDRom drive? It would be easier to use that.

What you can also do is take out your internal harddisk, and put it into an external reader, partition it to have, say, a 1Gb fat32 and the rest to another partition. then copy all the winXP boot files to it. make that partition active and boot to that and install to another partition.

also, I have never needed to install usb drivers in DOS, well I have but it has normally been scripted into whatever I was doing already.

Maybe you need to specify a drive or add more details to the driver in config sys.. stretching my memory, so a quick google:

Loading and enabling a single CD-ROM device driver you had to use both config.sys and autoexec.bat:

The CONFIG.SYS file contains the following DEVICE command:

device=c:\devices\cdromdrv.sys /d:mscd000

This command loads the device driver CDROMDRV.SYS, which came with the
CD-ROM drive. The AUTOEXEC.BAT file contains the following MSCDEX command:

c:\dos\mscdex /d:mscd000 /l:g

maybe you haven't fully done the USB driver part.

does your laptop have a floppy drive and a CDRom drive?

cheers

Hi,
It has been a while since I used win98 but I don't think it natively supports NTFS.
As said above it would be a good idea first updating laptops BIOS.

Re: hallo i need help please

July 17th, 2013, 10:00

wndows 98 and Windows Me or anything lower does not support NTFS.

You Know... you really need to read the answers to your questions and the questions we ask... carefully.

"does your laptop have a floppy drive and a CDRom drive?"

does it have a floppy drive
Have you checked in BIOS that it DOES support booting from USB?

Go through your BIOS by pressing F2, F10 or DEL or whatever and see what settings are there for USB and booting.

did you do this?
and also the exact model of your laptop.
?

have you gone to the webpage of your laptop at HP, Acer, IBM, ASUS...whatever, as we don't know, to check the manual?

when we get some details we can help more.

i have an extrnell floopy drive.

That's Good, is it USB and is it working properly?
i was update my bios.

Does this mean you did update your BIOS? Your translation "I was update my bios" is not very good English. No problem but can you please say it a little different/better?

it's dell latitude cs

Ok, good, can you post a link to your laptop support page at dell? thanks

now i'm trying to go to my extarnell dvd drive and it's wrire "target not found".

the external DVD is USB?
Did it work before?
How are you trying to go to your drive?

I think you may need to:
1) create a boot floppy with CDROM Drivers on it.
2) boot the CDROM and install Windows XP.

you can find some boot disks here: http://www.bootdisk.com/

it's not work...

the laptop recorgnize the dvd rom but it's not load cd's. i think it's beacuse it's an usb 1 slut and the dvd rom is usb 2-3.

Re: hallo i need help please

So if the USB on the laptop is not USB2.0, maybe you can get a PCMCIA to usb 2.0 or a PCMCIA to CD..

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEC-Chip-PCM ... 5aebf187da

If you don't want your data that is on the laptop, take the drive from the laptop, put it in another PC, format it to FAT32, copy full winXP cd to it, boot with a floppy bootdisk and install XP.
