I'm trying to recover files from my hard drive, when I open my comport I can see the drive there with the assign letter G: and it shows 40 gb free of 238 (256) the disk size. The problem is when I open the disk only shows that is 18 mb been used, it shows all the folders but they seem to be empty. I tried to change the files permission/ownership but still doesn't work. I don't know where my files are or why it shows that there is 40 gb free space and when I open the disk all the folders are empty and that I'm using only 18 mb.
I also enable to view hidden folders but still not working.

what problems have you had with the disk?
so it is added as a second hard disk in your system?
what make and model disk is it?
256gb? what size is it 250Gb?
have you tried software like GetDataBack?
did you right click on the disk, choose properties-->Tools-->error checking ?
anything else relevant?

Before you do anything, start by getting a full sector-by-sector clone, set the original drive aside and run data recovery programs against the clone. If you run into any issues cloning the drive, stop and seek the assistance of a pro before you permanently lose all your data.

FYI information cloning the hard drive with bad sectors or physical/mechanical problems can be risky.
We only recommend do the clone using software when it comes to logical problems like deleted or formatted data.
Good Luck

With a nod to the pro's above, if it's valuable, send it to a lab.
It maybe just the Windows OS hiding files and folders from you as a *security* measure.
If cloning, bad sectors, Linux Live CD etc are beyond your capability, try downloading R-Studio or similar.
As it is a spare drive which is the problem, and not your main, install the program to C: drive and from there run a scan on G: drive.
In Demo mode it will at least show you if the folders are there and contain files.
If it works, buy one of their products and recover your files.
If it starts to show errors or locks up, then it is more complex than just recovery software will handle, but at least you haven't spent money on something that is no use.
