Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 clicking noise

July 24th, 2013, 14:40

Hey guys, I have a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 HDD from a Maxtor 1TB Basics External HDD. The drive is no longer recognised by Windows when plugged in via USB. The drive is still within the Maxtor enclosure and runs off the power supply and USB lead provided with this. When the drive is plugged in it spins up, clicks, then spins down and constantly repeats. Below is a video I have found on Youtube demonstrating the exact issue I am having.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be? Sounds like the bearings could be stuck? Let me know if you need anymore info.
Thanks

Could be a number of things, but stuck bearing is not one of them.

Could well be a firmware issue, but its not a DIY thing I'm afraid.

Thanks for you replies guys.

@Spildit I don't have access to a PC with a SATA connection to try, so I was thinking of getting something like this
http://www.ebuyer.com/341689-startech-usb-2-0-to-sata-ide-adapter-usb2sataide, to see if it works.

@northwind How do you get a terminal output?

Thanks for the links Spildit, I'm going to see if I can get hold of a PC to test the drive with. If I was to get a TTL adapator, what would that tell me?

The drive will post its status report to the terminal.
