Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

Hello.
My colleague has WD Book Essential.
The password was used to protect content. He knows that password.
Now he tried to access data at the disk
but after trying to unlock the disk (this works is seems to me well - he puts the password and clicks some button...),
the operatiol system (windows xp) is frozing and it is impossible to acces the data.
After remowing the WD Book from USB connector the operational system stops to freeze.
We make conclusion that probably the PCB is bad.
How we can get the data from the HDD without paying the big money to professional?
Thanks for your advice.

Hi,
I don't think that is a problem of the PCB.
If the drive is still requesting PWD, it means that is still detected, so PCB seems fine.
Most probably the problem is related to firmware or to some failing head.
I think there's not much you can do without professional help.
The only way is let it freezed until he decides to wake up (if ever will wake up).
Of course that you should understand that if you do that you're putting your data at risk.
