Crazy Question

So Long story... see below

TL;DR: my sata hdd got a mother board password set, i dont know the password... i dont have the computer the original password is set on, i need to recovery photos etc.

my question is.
If I connect this to another pc mount it and copy the partition to another drive will that enable me to have access to the data?

My mother husband found out she was getting a divorce and locked her hdd... it has all her family photos etc... i had a friedn that lives local try to do a few things... i will post more tomorrow if anyone is interested in helping...

If the drive is password locked there is not so much you can do you're self.
Take it to DR shop and ask them to unlock it for you...but prepare, you'll probably need to prove ownership of it.

Sounds like the OP is saying the mainboard has a password lock. Different than HDD encryption pswd..

Take your hdd out of pc - connect it to another pc as 2nd hdd or put it
into an external usb hdd box and connect it to another pc as external
hdd
- copy you data off of the drive

look for professional help
avoid persons (neighbours, family, collegues) who "just want to help"
... there is some software in the internet for unlocking hdd - but after-
wards the data is lost.
A real pro will unlock the drive and keep your data ok - but you will
have to pay for the work. If you cant afford that (now), then wait
until you have the money.
Avoid any (do it yourself) alternative solution - it will most likely
brick your hdd and most probably your data too.

- if BIOS password, go to Google and search the mainboard model and password.

If you aren't sure, then as HaQue said, a bit more detail really needed.

Acknowledging previous replies, maybe another angle without getting into the why's and wherefore's of terminology.

Ownership: (not sure on specifics of US law but)
If it's *his* PC then bypassing *his* security could have legal consequence.
If it's *her* PC then *he* could face legal consequence for locking her out.
If it's not *YOUR* PC then you could face legal action for bypassing security.

Maybe just ensure the hardware is safely kept away from prying hands of friends and helpers til it's all sorted.
Could do more harm than good.
Once the shi... dust has settled just a chat between relevant parties may sort it.

computer ... mobo ... hdd, take your pick.

its easy for DR pro's to forget not-so-tech-savvy ppl may not have a grip on terms we use day to day and are familiar with, along with maybe non native english speakers trying to chip in with help.

That aside, one of my customers insists on calling her entire Desktop unit "a hard drive", another carries her "slaptop" around with her.

Correct me if I am wrong but, as far as I know, when you set the BIOS Password; the computer does automatically set the HDD password to be equal with the BIOS Password. Even if you take the HDD to another computer, you still need to know the Password in order to access the HDD.

By the way, is not your motherºs husband your father (step-father) ?
