One annoying 8mb file won't come off drive...

One tiny 8mb accounts file will not come off a 2TB WD drive.


The file can be seen fine using Windows Explorer.

When you click on it to "Send To" or "Copy" it says 10 seconds left and then it just
freezes....

It is so tatalisingly close...The heads of the drive are okay...the drive just seems to have a lot of bad sectors.

Here is what I've tried..

1) I imaged the drive using DDI4 but on the destination drive the 8Mb file is just coming up as corrupt.

So I went back to the work on the Source drive directly:

2) I have tried using the Unstoppable Copier but after about a minute this freezes.

3) I have tried connecting the drive to a Mac...no joy.

In DRE, if you choose to only image that specific file, how bad is it? How many unread? What sort of file is it?

Maybe.

At least with that you'll be able to create a map of the sectors pertaining to that file. Then you'll see how many bad/unread sectors are in it (they'll flag up as red or black)

I did a similar thing with a Quickbooks Accounts backup a while ago. I continually read and re-read only the unreadable sectors until I got a full green map, then the file worked fine

Why not? It appears to work like ddrescue which is a tool that is often recommended for DIYers. It should at least retrieve the good sectors of the file.

Why wouldn't I?

Because I would use PC3k with Data Extractor, which allows much greater control and reading options.

In hindsight I should have said "I personally wouldn't USE it" rather than "recommend" it.

In any case it's an accounts file, so ANY bad/missing sectors could be very bad news, the OP is trying to get a 100% good read of all sectors in the file. With DE and perseverance I have successfully done this in a very similar situation.

Having never attempted this type of situation with DIY tools, I couldn't say whether your freebie SW tool would work, or just make things worse. That's all I'm saying.

Well, ISTM that the OP has given up on expensive tools and is trying other options.

Surely, anything has to be better than "connecting the drive to a Mac". That's a sign of desperation.
