Seagate Expansion 1TB clicks and beeps - comp doesn't detect

October 27th, 2013, 0:10

Good day ladies and gents~

I apologise if this topic/question has been beaten to death, but I'm at a standstill and don't know what else to do.

I have/had a Seagate Expansion 1TB, all good for the past 1 year. One day; it happened. The drive started beeping and clicking upon startup. I read up on alot of info and most pointed to the crappy enclosure or power adapter; I took it to Seagate and they said it's HDD failure and as it was under warranty; they can replace it with a new one; but the old one will be taken and destroyed. If I wanted to have my data recovered; I'm on my own and as the HDD is not accessible unless I break the enclosure.....warranty will be VOID once I do that even AFTER them having deemed it as faulty (crappy reasoning and service!!!).

Anyways; so I'm on my own. I opened up the enclosure and purchased an external SATA adapter.....and prayed....nope....didn't work and the beep and click is still there.

I have been reading that it "COULD" be the PCB and I can try to have this replaced with the EXACT same model down to the dot. I sourced one for about USD$40 bucks and was wondering if this is worth a try? I have been quoted close to USD$700 to have the drive "looked" at and a possible repair in a clean room...but no guarantees on the results.... =.="

I don't have a video of my drive beeping; but found something identical on youtube.

Can gurus on here give me some inputs on a fix? I don't believe the $700 is the way to go as the platters are spinning; arms are moving (clicking)...so there MUST be a simple fix.

Thanks in advance~~~~~

Sounds like you might have a problem with the heads on the drive. You could try and take the PCB of the drive and clean the contacts that connect to the drive with a rubber, (Be gentle as to not rub of the components on the board) and connect again, but if that does not work, then you will need to send it in for data recovery.

Messing around or opening the drive at that stage will damage it further and opening the drive will serverley damage the internal platters.

Sorry for bad news but everything points to internal failure unless you or someone else can rule out the pcb, very unlikely. If so there is no fix and no alternative to pro intervention.

Yikes~~~ That's exactly what I didn't wanna hear from you gurus.... I'll give the connectors on the PCB a rub....won't hurt I figure.

One fact I forgot to mention which I think should be important too...

This happened right after I re-arranged my cables .... and I plugged it into a different socket on my extension board. I soon found out that that specific outlet (new location of my HDD ac adapter) had issues and I switched out the entire board.

There could have been a power issue causing a short on the PCB? (As you can see..I'm still in denial). :rip:

Thanks for the input guys. Really appreciate it.

Then your hard drive PCB could have received an over current and damaged something inside. A simple PCB swap might work, depending on if the preamp was not damaged. Can you upload a picture of the PCB board and all its components.

Since the drive is trying to power up, it could be a problem on the PCB or Preamp problem. If its a preamp problem, not much you can do except have it sent in for a head replacement.
