How to change serial ?

Just a question....

Would it be possible to change the serial number of a harddrive or copy it from the old broken one (same model off course ) ?
(Hitachi and Toshiba 2,5 hdd's)

Problem: have software that is locked to the harddrive serial number and want to swap the disk since the old one isn't 100%
