Some Questions about HDD repairing world.

November 26th, 2013, 18:21

Hello Friends!

I am a beginner in the hdd repairing, and i have some questions that are not fully clear for me.

1- Is it posible repair bad sectors in moderns hdds that guarantee to continue using them? If yes, some suggested tool, please.
2- Is it posible connect via terminal command (using serial port connection) to other than seagate disks (for example, WD, Maxtor, Hitachi...)? If yes, some wiring diagram and pin connection, please.
3- Is it posible to repair hdd with bad S.M.A.R.T message?
4- Does exist some "non-pro tool" for update firmware when disk is not recognized in bios? (It is posible to flash the firmware part located in the pcb rom chip using and EEPROM programmer, but what about firmware located in platters or service area)

Well, I hope it is not a lot to request.
Thanks in advance,
Oleg.

You say u are a beginner in hdd repairing??????

The question you have asked in the first instance, is Million dollar questions to all hard disk repair specialists and the answer varies from member to member. However, i give my version:

Ans 1. Yes if they are not physically damaged. best HDD regenator2011 others come next.
Ans 2. Yes. Readymade terminals are cheap, but if still you ask for diagrams search internet.
Ans 3. Smart BAD cannot be repaired generally they are NOT shown(Hidden)
Ans 4. use SEDIV and WDR for flashing firmware of PCB or any other programmer with CLIP.........
that all from my stable......... I am still a novice....................

If the idea is make money or make a profession of it, it doesn't work with "free" or "freed" (*cough*) tools, especially asking HERE.
Maybe the unique thing you can do is fixing some old drives with more or less legit stuff , but there is no alternative to pro gear and know how when it comes to recent drives.
1) Each family has his own peculiarities, you require factory sw or procedures for many recent drives.
3) Not every drive has terminal, or if it even has it, it is not useful for what you want.
3) SEe above, Smart tripping is a consequence. Either you have the resources or find the way yourself or trade info for info.
4) It depends if it works or not.. or if and how much pirate is it. Do not expect help with such questions, better luck somewhere else 8).
Advice : stay away from crap software or non legit stuff if you deal with customer data especially from friends, the border between earning some money and falling into an ocean of s**t is very thin, especially depending on where on "planet Earth" you are.

Gurus,

While you use and are dependent on destructive and UN-intelligent tools like hdd re-generator, it'll probably stay this way... :(

Thanks very much Loglife. I have tried Hdd regenerator in some cases, but in most cases it can not fix the problem.

Thanks BlackST : Your answers to my questions satisfied me. About other comments i want to be clearer:

The problem is not to make money, but not to have enough money!!!

...especially depending on where on "planet Earth" you are.

I am from Earth Planet, exactly and proudly from... Cuba.

SeDIV full costs money, that is the real problem pointed out by the OP, other tools except thousand $ standard like PC 3000 Udma simply don't work or have a lot of problems.

Great reply, Spildit, thanks very much!!!

The smart problem can be troubleshooted in seagate drives via terminal command, but in case of Maxtor for example, which is the correct tool?

For the firmware update i have my own method, desoldering rom bios chip from pcb, and flashing it with and eeprom programmer with a same firmware version downloaded from some internet place or much better, if you have and identical good working drive with the same firmware, it is posible to make a copy of firmware via eeprom programmer. However, this is not recommended for everyone. This procedure had working in many cases, but not in all. I have read that in the pcb rom chip stores only a small part of firmware, and the most part are stored in service area located at hdd platters. Thats why i am asking for that update tool or method.

Depop head on Maxtor i.e. Calypso or Sabre with MHDD and brain ? I see it hard to do even with tools...
P.S. Ace Labs (the maker of PC3000) DOESN'T SUPPORT old versions of PC3000 neither sell them.
