Samsung HD103SI burnt PCB

Hello,

I receive Samsung HD103SI. Drive doesent spin.
I check PCB and I found that one selectde element is broken.
Is thic common problem for this drive?

If the 12V TVS diode were shorted, then it should shut down the PSU.

looks like the drive sustained an over voltage and the Black diode might have done its job. Snip the broken black thing off and your drive should work again. If not, then the fuse could have gone and you will need to do more work on it.

thank you for your suggestion. I unsolder diode and drive spin up and I was able to recover all data.
Just one more question. How to identify type of diode to replace it eith new one?

Just replace it with an SMBJ12A. My FAQ tells you where to buy one. Alternatively, just use a 12V TVS diode from any other board.

Hi everybody,
sorry to resume this old post.
However, I have similar troubles (used the wrong power supply on the same HDD within an external LACIE device).

I noticed the same TVS 12V being a little bit "burned".
Before I do anything, should I simply remove this diode or should I remove it and then connect the edges creating a sort of bridge?
Sorry I am really a newbie and also my terminology can be inexact.

you can remove tvs.
Otherwise you can post picture of PCB here, before you remove TVS.

I found out myself.
I just removed the TVS diode and the Hard Disk works beautifully.
I need to really thank the authors of the posts here.
They saved me a lot of $

Just remember that your drive does not have that protection any more, so if you use the wrong power supply you will blow up your hard drive for good!...

Be careful and backup your stuff.

The best in this case is to backup all your data, because if you have any power problem you will lost your data, because you have not power portection.

If you have power problems PCB or Heads amplificator or other electronics must burn, and data recovery will be harder.

Here in Australia I would buy SMBJ12A and SMAJ5.0A from Farnell or RS Components. I don't know what you have in India.
