2) assuming there is a problem in service area, if you have access to a LEGIT pc3000 or SD you should be able to diagnose it properly and (with necessary resources and know how) eventually fix it. But I have a feeling from what you said that you don't know how HDDs work , and unfortunately without tools and knowledge it is not possible to do anything.
P.S. your drive is very likely more than 10 years old or so, so it may have a lot of problems.

Step By Step instructions on how to do that are posted on the Ace forum on this thread :

When you gain access to the legal PC3K UDMA tool you should also have a username/pass to log-in on that forum and read the instructions on how to use that feauture on PC3K-UDMA.

Very frequent maxtor sa problem. Drive can't translate LBA to CHS.
If you want to ship me the drive there are good chances that i can fix it and get the data.

7 out of more than 2000 in my stats on 6E, 2B, 2F, 6Y, 33Hxx. And not on 4R. How do you say "very frequent" ?

On other hand if adaptive parameters wrong whats then?
I think simply they can be preserved as they were, but with aging mechanics it would require different current to properly position heads or something alike. Heads swap again?
Unstable Heads (but not totally damaged) - Try to clone the drive with DDI4. With luck you can get a clone of the drive without swaping heads.
incorrect adaptives module - Fix with PC3K UDMA.
