Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

I received a 6 month old laptop with a toshiba MQ01ABD100H 1TB drive(see drive label pic) in it. It had stopped booting. I put it on my Atola Disksense Ethernet and tested it(see drive report). The Atola flagged bad firmware. I have been working with Dmitry trying to repair the firmware but the drive is too new for an automatic firmware recovery. The client would like to recover his files before sending the laptop back for warranty repair.
Any suggestions as to next steps? I feel, with a drive this new, finding a donor is futile. Is there a way(I remember doing something one time with a Seagate) of terminal'ing into the firmware and doing something to get this recoverable? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
