Need help with WD caviar blue 640 gb

February 13th, 2014, 15:43

Hi Guys

I really need your help / advise on this one.

This drive powers on and spins but i can't read it. Drive management tells me it needs to be initialized, but can't do this due to CRC error.
Data recovery tells me MBR needs to be fixed, but can't fix it.
Can't read RAW data.
HDD size shows as 0 and it can't read any model or serial?

Thx a lot for helping and please ask if you need more info.

Is there any DIY chance on this one?

/A.C

No , there is not.
Special knowledge and special equipment can help to solve FW issue for this drive.

So it's a firmware issue?

If I remove the PCB board and have a tech clone it to a new one.
Would this be a solution?

Thx for your reply

Nope, the most significant part of FW stores on the platters in service area.

Exactly right, the PCB only contains a tiny portion of FW to spin the drive up and access the main FW on the platters.

The fact that your drive spins up is a good indication that the PCB is OK.

If you're willing to ship to UK, then we can almost certainly help :)
