No prompt from Barracuda ST2000DM001

June 1st, 2014, 17:52

Hi, my first post in a hdd forum, and it's a cry for help!

I have this ST2000DM001, 2TB HD with firmware CC4B and the PCB revision is B, this drive stopped being detected by the BIOS... no weird noises, when powered on you can hear the heads moving, the drive spinning, etc... but no sign of life in the PC.

There are tons of tutorials on how to connect the drive via serial port using the terminal, and I did it, but I never get to the desired prompt... in my case I have 2 outcomes :

1) When the drive is shielded in the heads terminals

In both cases this goes on for about five minutes, then the RX led stops flashing... However, I left the drive connected to the computer for an hour and tryed again to ctrl z, but nothing...

No matter how fast I spam ctrl z, It never works... I've left it do his bussines without me touching anything, then come back and give it a try and nothing... I've tryed every imaginable combination, and always the same result, the drive is busy and won't listen to me.

Any idea what I might do?

Thanks in advance

If you need data recovery, then send it to a specialist in data recovery.
It's not an easy drive to work with. Even you get terminal access, there will more than likely be other issues with the drive that any common free software out there will fail to produce a successful recovery.

95% that's defects in the system area / 5% -- bad heads.
First option isn't too hard to work with, second one is more problematic.

Do you have any suggestion of data recovery experts in america? (U.S., Canada)
