Magnetic Data Technologies HDD

June 25th, 2014, 4:44

Hi Guys,

Just a quick question, I've got a drive **apparently** manufactured by Magnetic Data Technologies (I've never heard of them before!).

The drive spins up, but the heads do not leave the parking ramp, they just quickly move back and forth on the ramp 4 or 5 times, then the HDD spins down, then the whole process starts again.

There is no visible damage to the platters and the heads move freely on the parking ramp.

Any suggestions to the cause of this issue?

Thanks in advance

Can you put a picture of the drive? I think the heads are damaged and you need to replace them.

These drives aren't made by them, but refurbished by them.

Here is a picture of the label, let me know if you need a picture of the drive internals as I'll have to get it back into the 'clean' cabinet for that

cheers.

Thanks for the replies so far.

PC-3000 recognised the HDD as a Western Digital

With the picture seams a WD refurbished. The drive shut down and is recognised in PC3K by the PCB? Try to change the RAM map for 0 to test the head 0 and pres F7 our soft reset and go out to see if the drive can read the FW with that head.

Thanks, just tried that and again, the heads do not leave the parking ramp

How many heads the drive have? try to do the same for the head 1. Because the head 0 and 1 read the FW. If it doesn't work you will need to change the heads for a new ones.

It is rebranded WD3200JS-00VWA0

did exactly the same with head 1.

I have just noticed that occasionally, the heads will move on to the platters and just aimlessly go to the spindle and back a few times before going back onto the parking ramp

You need to change heads.

I also suggest you do not power up the drive again, until the heads are changed.

As hddguy said, this is a Tornado, so you can use a compatible one for heads.

if you are tried to change Head map to 0 and you tried to change head map to 1 and the result is the same, mos probaly is broken heads, you need a donnor drive as other people sais here.

you got good chance to get it because As hddguy said, this is a WD Tornado. easy to find donnor in this case

Please report us your advances.
