Help with External Seagate Barracuda not spinning anymore!

July 22nd, 2014, 23:29

Hi Gurus,

I have an external Seagate HDD that I didn't use for at least half a year and today when I powered it on, it simply didn't work or spin anymore. It's completely dead and there are no signs of "heartbeats" coming out of it. I removed the protective case and noticed that there is a small circuit board interfacing between the power cord, USD and the disk. So my first thought was that some of the electronic components in the power board (Raptor 3.5" main board V2R1) were damaged.

So, I removed it from the disk and then plugged it to an universal drivewire, assuming that if the issue was with the circuitry in this board, then I´ll be able to power the disk on by bypassing the board:

But the result was exactly the same... dead drive and wife screaming for her tons of pictures and memories !!!

So, I was wondering if there is a way to know if the issue is related to the CB attached to the disk

or I'm facing a mechanical problem in here?

Hopefully you'll be able to point me in the right direction how to proceed in this case. This is one more snapshot of the defunct drive:

and these are the characteristics:

SEAGATE (BARRACUDA) 1.5TB
S/N: 6XW1EJPD
ST31500541AS
P/N: 9TN15R-568
FIRMWR: CC94

Thank you for any help !

Can you show us the "interesting" side of the HDD PCB? You'll need a Torx 6 driver.

When you power on the drive, put an ear above the drive and listen if there is a weak sound as "bzzz" "bzzz" "bzzz".
If you heard that sound then most probably it's a mechanical issue (you would need a pro to fix it) but sometimes can be a PCB issue.
If you don't heard totally any sound then very likely pcb is faulty.

+ michael chiklis

but as fzabkar said, will be good a pic from the other side of PCB.
