WD1600JS-55NCB1 firmware wanted, please help!

August 24th, 2014, 16:22

Hi there again!
I have a patient drive that clicks. With hot swap, almost all firmware modules are readable, but some important not. The hot swap drive's firmware microcode unfortunately is not match.
I think the drive could be work again, when i overwrite that important modules that is not readable now, example 000E8 overlay module.
So the drive is a WD1600JS-55NCB1 WD Hawk drive and made dec 2006
The firmware version is 10.02E01
The overlay microcode is 109g
Thanks so much for any help!

Are you trying to recover data from or refurbish the drive?

Thanks..

Overwriting important modules on patient drive with other is not good practice, especially on this family of drives. Ensuring all resources from the drive have been read correctly and as best as possible (multiple copies definitely recommended) is vital. After this step, for this particular case, would focus more on the hot swap and pre-requisite operations in being able to access data on the patient, as so far it seems the patient's SA seems severely degraded.

I have read out all modules except these:
04
06
1E
41
DD
E8

I think if i only overwrite first only the 1E overlay module (if i have correct firmware with correct microcode) maybe the drive could be accessible again....then i hope i can access to user area.

Perhaps you could read both copies of all the tracks, and then reconstruct each damaged module from the partial copies. I could try to help you with that.

AIUI, you could then write these repaired tracks to a compatible donor, and then start the patient via a smart hotswap. This will avoid writing to the patient.

Hello
04
06
1E
41
DD
E8
These are not important module in data recovery,
for WD HAWK series if one of the head is weak the hdd start click 3 to 4 times, this clicking also happens due to PCB in hawk series.

For HOT SWAP follow this.
Upload 31 32 33 34 36 module of patient hdd into donor hdd, then perform regenerate the translator using g and p list of a donor hdd.
now connect the donor hdd in pc3000 wd utility and open data extractor to built head bit map , now again go to the pc3000 wd utility.
after doing this again perform hot swap, This time you can see the sectors,
again go to the previously opened DE and start cloning the selective head.
