HDD WD20EFRX damaged 5V TVS diode removed HDD still dead

Hi to everyone,

I recently updated my PC. Bought a Molex -> 2x SATA adapter. The adapter turns out to be damaged, 5V cable is interrupted. When measured a slight touch of the cable makes the ohmmeter jump from 0ohm to max and back. This cable burned 2 of my harddrives. The first one has TVS diode burned, no other protection, means 5V on this HDD was shorted to GND.

The second one, the important one is WD 2TB RED. The 5V TVS(D3) shorted, the 0ohm(R67) measured open.

Removed 5V TVS(D3), replaced 0ohm(R67). HDD is spinning, clicking, recognized in BIOS as PATA PS: WDC WD20EFRX-68EUZNO. But not running in Windows. Used SATA data and power cable that I use for other working drive so the PC is OK.

Of course no sign of any schematics regarding HDD drives in internet. No datasheets for parts used in drive. I will be thankful for any clue regarding where to look.

Also considering replacing the PCB, but first want to now if its possible to check:
1. Is the HDD Bios(U12) alive or also burned, from the HDD symptoms assuming Bios is ok
2. 5V is used inside the drive, probably the preamp, no idea what to check...

Given that the drive is clicking, I would say the preamp has taken a belt

U12 is OK. The drive wouldn't spin if it were not.

If the preamp is damaged, then it's a strange fault. AFAIK, the drive won't spin if it doesn't detect a functioning preamp. If you place a business card between J1 and the HDA connector, does the drive spin up?

Can you at least read the ROM using SeDiv?

That will tell us if the model number is stored in a ROM module (0D) or whether the drive is getting its ID from the SA (unlikely, given the clicking).

When I put plastic between J1 and HDA connector the drive is spinning. No clicking of course.

I was unable to run the SeDiv on my PC. Running Win8.1/Win7, compatibility mode didn't help.

I was only able to try to read the ID with MHDD.

LBA:0 BIOS: 80H

And a message that this device does not support LBA mode. MHDD will not work with this device.

Makes it sense to run the SeDiv with Windows XP SP2? Or is there any other SW that could help?

It appears that your drive does not need to see a preamp before it spins up. Therefore your testing would confirm that the preamp is bad, in which case it would be pointless to proceed with SeDiv.
