Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

I have a Seagate ST3000DM drive that will spin up (no clicking or anything abnormal sounding) will be recognized and you can even open a file but then the explorer window freezes or the application using the file freezes and you can access anything. I am new to hard drive repair and can't afford professional help at the moment but this drive has irreplaceable family data on it so I would deeply appreciate anyone's help.
I have tried running testdisk on it and that freezes too. I could probably swap things out but thought starting here would be a good idea.
Can anyone help? Pleeeeeeease
