ST3000DM001 - 9YN166-302 does not show up in BIOS

October 15th, 2014, 8:49

Hi, I have a Seagate ST3000DM001 9YN166-302 (Barracuda 7200.14 Family) firmware CC4C printed on the drive, maybe I did an upgrade to CC4H. PCB 100664987 REV A.

From one day to another the drive did not show up in Windows and neither in BIOS. At that day my RAID1 also needed to resync. Connected it to others PCs und USB adapters too. To no avail. The drive was some kind of pool for temporary data which needed to be sorted and then archived. Nothing really important, but it would be nice to have a second look. So this is a good scenario to learn something new.

The drive spins up and everything sounds normal. I got a PL2303HXD USB TTL interface and connected it to the drive (SATA Connector/green TXD/white RXD/black GND), terminal settings (speed 38400 / data bits 8 / stop bits 1 / parity none / flow control none) using putty. See below terminal readout.

I am not able to get a prompt via CTRL-Z and the terminal. It seems I have to shorten the drive to be able to get a prompt. Problem is, during all my research I did not find any clear info which pins to use and at which moment and how long I have to shorten.

Next step would be knowing the right commands to rescue the drive. And at that point, there seems to be some confusion too. There is lot info regarding the 7200.11/12 drives but it sound like I am not able to use these commands for the 7200.14 family.

Thanks a lot for your help. Below is my terminal readout... The LED:00000047 FAddr:FFFFFFFE goes on and on.
