WD 2.5" 320GB HDD PCB SWAP

October 26th, 2014, 4:39

Hi everyone!

I got a dead WD 2.5 laptop HDD that died most likely due to a power related issue, i was installing a new PSU and the first time i power on the PC everything works fine, even other HDDs, but this one died out of nowhere, apparently the immediately noticeable problem is that it doesn't spin, but the pcb warms up when plugged to the PSU, the HDD was working perfectly fine before this so i was sure something fried inside

Now i traced and bought a similar PCB in order to maybe someday be able to repair this one, hoping that whatever may have been fried was a part of the PCB, said part finally arrived yesterday.

Model, PCB version and Firmware are identical however the DCM has some different parts, i proceeded to swap the PCBs just like that and yes! the Hard drive spins again! but.... it is not detected by the motherboard, it even freezes for a while trying to read from the HDD.

Now here is what i need help with:

How do i know if the Motor controller is dead ?
I heard HDDs had other parts that would fry on over-voltage, how do i know which and how do i test them?

lastly if the motor controller chip is "almost" identical should i attempt to swap only that part?

If you need pics of both boards i will upload probably tomorrow

Thanks for your time

you need provide us model, DCM, and all info about HDD. if you send pics, better, maybe your PCB is reparable. otherwise you need make ROM tranfer from old PCB to new ones.

Sometimes ROM tarnsfer is not posible and other times is posible but we need to know model drrive.

Let us know

and we will can help you
