Fired hdd pcb replaced with cloned hdd pcb from datapro

November 4th, 2014, 8:20

Dear all,

i have accidentally fired my 2TB seagate barracuda hard disk pcb.The pcb of Barracuda with number, firm ware, model and revision iis 100617465 REV B.

I got an identical pcb for the fired hdd from data pro data recovery Canada. I have send the burnt pcb to them and they have given me a pcb which is cloned. I installed the hdd and found that it's detecting but the size was showing only 8gb instead of 2tb. Could anyone throw light into this?.

Either they did not transfer the ROM to the donor PCB, sent you the wrong PCB or there are other issues internally.

Dear lcoughey,
Thanks for the reply. Actually data pro mentioned that they will swap the rom but on inspecting I found its not swapped but they have pasted a label mentioning that cloned pcb on the identical pcb

"ROM Cloning" could be done via software as well, possibly explaining why you don't see physical work evidence.

What was the damage on the original PCB? Were there any burnt components near the SATA power connector?

Dear fzabkar,
Thanks for the reply. Tvs diode was burnt.the rest of the components seems fine.

Which TVS diode was burn?
If 5V TVS diode burnt then probably even head pre-amp is burnt.

st_m13fqbl Hdd is detected as this in bios... Strange

st_m13fqbl is the pcb factory alias, this is shown when hdd SA firmware can't be loaded.
Do you hear motor spinning sound?
Do you hear head clicking sound?
Does the motor keep spinning or it spins off after few seconds?

AFAICT, your board usually sustains damage to the inductors that feed the relevant TVS diode. Were these inductors not burnt?

Hdd spins there is no problem. If it's connected for first time its detected and drivers get installed. But it's detected in bios as at_m13fqbl. Moreover it can't be initialized.
