audio from failed WD10JMVW WD My Passport USB drive.

Can anyone identify what type if failure this is? If it's just a stuck head I'd consider opening and attempting to unstick. Thanks

Sounds like it might be stuck heads, but hard to say from a recording (much easier with my ear on the drive). Can you tell if it's spinning up at all?

With those it could also be that the heads missed the ramp and are stuck off the edge of the platter. In either event, I'd highly recommend against opening it unless you have a clean room. But then again, it's your data.

Seems to be spinning yes. Clean room argument is valid, but the data isn't too important and I'm unlikely to ever pay the high cost of sending it out.

most likely media scratch.
not head stuck for sure.
