WD Caviar Green (2010 MYBOOKLIVE)

December 19th, 2014, 9:29

Good Morning.

First I wish to thank the mods and participants in this forum. Over the past few days I've been trying to educate myself on what the folks here specialize in.

My story is not uncommon, a child inadvertently plugged a different type of power supply into our mybook (WD 1TB Caviar Green) which contained music and family photos., movies, etc. This is the older of two drives, a newer one that is about two months old and, even after I have voided the warranty, is still working fine.

So, the fried one from 2010, shown below, appears to have two damaged area.

Before finding this forum, I took the newer drive and switched out the two "pcb's" from the newer drive to the older drive. While the originally burnt drive would now spin up, it could not be read. The newer drive is a 3 TB, the older burnt drive is 1 tb from 2010

So after reading here, I am considering the three hour drive to a metropolitan area (DC perhaps?) to try to find someone who can do a platter swap, so that I could recover the data.

Or do I need to find an older similar vintage same size my book live drive and cannibalize the pcb's? of course, I'm not sure if that would even work, that is after all why I'm posting.

Best Regards,

Steady

What's most important is a proper diagnostic to determine to extent of damage, whether you do it yourself or a data recovery company.
Could be relegated to just the controller bridge, but could have also affected other components.
Swapping the controller bridge will not work as they are different models with different chipware and code.

Can you post the full model of the damaged external drive?
Does the drive by itself spin up without odd sounds?

P.S. No need to drive to DC as you likely won't find anything there of use. You can order online just about anything you need if the issue is trivial. If complex, and budget allows, there are a couple of very good data recovery company choices in the D.C. area.

Additionally, there is no need to swap platters, unless the motor is somehow affected by this electronics issue, which is not impossible, but very low chances this is the case. Whoever tells you they will do a platter swap, take your drive and move on.

Sure,

And thank you, I am grateful for the favor of your reply. Here is a photo of the drive. When I put the newer drive pcb's onto the old drive, the drive did spin, I could feel it.

Thanks.
I meant the external's model. Asking to see if can figure out what kind of bridge controller should be on the drive.

Since the drive is spinning without issues, then it seems like it should be fine. All you need is a compatible controller bridge. Could likely use the code on it to search for another on eBay or something.

The serial number on the drive's label belongs to a WDBACG0010HCH-NESN 1TB My Book Live.

@Steady, which PCBs did you swap? IIUC you swapped the pictured PCB (4061-705086-001 Rev AD), not the PCB on the drive (2060-771698). Or did you swap both?
