One of my co-workers had this hard drive in an external enclosure. It was put up vertically on top of the PC, so I'm fairly certain it has fallen on its side a time or two. It has continued working fine until now.
Problem: spins up, clicks once, powers down. Pauses, repeats.
Attempt 1: Removed from external enclosure, inserted into PC with IDE slot and power supply. Same result.

Thoughts? The data is important but the company does not have the budget to pay for professional repairs. What are the chances of it being a bad board?
If we can't replace the board to hope to fix it, and we can't afford to pay for professional recovery services, what would your next step be? I realize the alternatives are likely low-probability alternatives and can do irreparable damage.
