WD20EARS - WD caviar green - not seen in windows

January 8th, 2015, 12:21

Hi world !

I don`t know if anyone else had this problem, but for me is the first time i encounter one as such.

My HDD is a 2TB WD green drive. It worked fine until last week. Past year it was rarely used. But now it is detected at booting, but in windows I cannot see it , not even in the device manager.

It has activy, it spins up, but I cannot access it. What can I do ?

Thank you !

Hi,

It's not on an external box right?
If it is you could remove and try outside the box.

If it's already directly connected to SATA, based on what you've said I would give a first shoot to firmware problems.

Try to check the drive with any other low level tool rather than just windows to check if you can "see" the drive.

If that does not help, you will need the help of a pro.

it s an internal drive. it s connected to sata port to the motherboard.
cannot change any firmware because i cannot access the hdd via any software.

all my data is on it. the 3 year guarantee expired last year. just my luck :(

Might be worth removing the hard drive from the case remove the PCB board from under the drive and give the contacts a clean with a rubber. I heard that some WD drives get oxidized.

If that does not help you, I would go to a pro to get a proper diagnosis.
