System freezes on large file transfers.

January 23rd, 2015, 19:01

Hey. So whenever i make large file transfers (copy / move) or even download stuff that are a few Gb's big, the whole system freezes and i need to hard reset.

It's a seagate 2TB hard drive, i made 1 partition with 200 GB with windows in it, and second partition with 1750 GB with all free space. All NTFS format.

I already ran chdisk and even a couple other disk diagnose programs, all returned no bad sectors or errors.

I even upgraded the hard drive firmware.

In this test i did, i download a 1GB torrent, with 3 ~300MB clips in it. The system did not crashed when i download that torrent. So i started copying the 1gb folder over and over. Copied fine until 9GB, when i selected the 9 folders (each with 1gb total 9GB) and copied them (by dragging holding CTRL), the system froze during the copy operation. I think what this test kinda shows is its not an issue with allocating 1 very large file (say a 2gb, 3gb, 4gb single file), since the folder had 3 300MB clips, but rather just any operation involving large amounts of GB's.

Another test i did is with this 32GB torrent, it contains several rar files, whenever i try to download it and the torrent program tries to allocate the 32gb space in the hard drive (it allocates the space prior to the download) the system also freezes. Like 2 mins after i started downloading the torrent, the system will freeze.

Another thing to notice is windows runs from this HDD (like i said earlier), and i can use the computer for hours without any freezes. But the same problem happens in the 200GB windows partition, system will freeze with large file transfers in that partition aswell.

I have another 1.5TB seagate HDD that i can download and make large transfers without any problem, so i think its not a motherboard controller problem.

Really wanted to try to fix (if possible) before RMA, so if anyone has any suggestions please let me know. Thanks a lot!

did you check s.m.a.r.t status of drive ?
you can check s.m.a.r.t with many utilities e.g Hard Disk Sentinel

Hey. Thanks for the reply, i used Speedfan smart, this is what shows up, do you know how to interpret all that? :

Also speedfan report link says End to End Error is "failing":

Thanks again!

if the drive is fairly new I recommend sending it back and have it replaced. Since your other 1.5tb drive is okay then the drive might have a fault or overheating. You could try the drive in another computer and see if it does the same, but it would be simple to return it for a new one.

Seagate put out a utility that is designed especially for their drives : seatools. http://www.seagate.com/au/en/support/internal-hard-drives/desktop-hard-drives/barracuda/ IIRC the tools will tell you if the drive has any attribute that will qualify for RMA.

in any case I would RMA, or throw in the bin. It is amazing how many disasters happen while people know there is an issue, then drag their feet deciding on the "best" option.

"Best" option for me is keeping my DATA ;-)

I know we're all quick to blame the HDD here (and with Seagate it's usually true), but actually in this case I'd guess the issue isn't related to the drive... . A bad RAM module, motherboard, or driver would be my guess.

RMA the drive! It has a bad SMART status.
End-to-end errors are below the threshold.
The drive has most likely a bad PCB (cache), which is causing the freezes.

Use a program like HDTune or CrystalDiskInfo to show the drive health and you will see.

Ah, I didn't see that in the SMART. Surprising that the program he's using says "no errors", you'd think it'd flag that.

Typical Seagate junk. RMA it see if they'll give you cash you can put toward a good HGST drive instead of replacement Seagate.

Yeah, guess i have no options left.

Thanks a lot everyone, appreciate the help.

I have similiar HDD, It has SMART BAD status, tons of realocated sectors and it used to crash when I was copying many small files (large files were fine). It was 2 years old (no warranty, I would definitely RMA it !), after cleaning PCB-HSA pads and changing SATA cable it crashes less and I use it to store large files like movies.
It is interesting that It worked fine until I connected new ST HDD into system, old disk immediately started crashing and reallocated sectors rised from around 20 to 4000.

If it freezes, I just disconnect power supply from it and connect it again, it spins up fine and continues working :?

Definitely, if you can, then RMA it. Unluckily, if you cant (no warranty ?!), before you throw it out of window you can try few experiments on it, :D like baking it:
http://www.addictivetips.com/hardware/f ... g-in-oven/ Remove PCB from HDD and bake it like that guy baked his GPU. It can help in situations when PCB has invisible soldering problems like little cracks or "cold joints". Have fun 8)
