Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

I have pictures that I need to recover from a failed hard drive and I have no idea what I'm doing. I thought I had everything backed up on my external drives, but some of them apparently were not.
Drive is a 1TB Seagate that came with my Dell PC.
So far I have tried:
When choosing what drive to boot from, the PC sees the drive as a 1TB drive over SATA.
SpinRite gets stuck on 'Searching for Drives' when the drive is plugged in, but doesn't when it is unplugged.
TestDisk on Windows does not identify the partitions, but sees the drive (Windows sees it over USB as a 2TB raw drive).
ddrescue on linux over SATA failed, but I can no longer remember why.
What are my next steps? Are there settings in TestDisk that I should try to change? Should by first priority be to try to clone it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks spildit.
Yeah from what I read I'm lucky that Spinrite didn't work I guess.
The drive is the 7200.12 model. Are there any drive specific fixes I can try? Or any other things I can try to get it to clone?

Thanks so much, I ordered the adapter and hopefully I can get this working. I'll update once I get the log.
