Swapping Seagate ST3100052AS and 528 possible?

March 17th, 2015, 15:35

Hi forum Sorry for the double
I have searched a shiel on the internet but cannot find the right answer for my problem, maybe You can help me to find it right.
I have one fried PCB of a Seagate 1TB ST31000520AS that does not power on.
I have also a good working same Seagate 1TB marked ST31000528AS.
Before swapping the two PCB and damaging something i have searched on the internet and found that this code (520/528) stands for the sectors the hard drive is divided ?! :shock: So replacing the PCBs wont help me.
Is it correct?
Does someone explain me if it is still possible to swap the PCB or do I need a firmware upgrade or any other action ?
Sorry for the messy infos,
Best regards
Houseman

5 = cache size
2 = number of platters (2)

520 is a Barracuda LP with 5900 rpm

524 and 528 are Barracuda 7200.12 with 7200 rpm

The PCBs from 524 and 528 will not work on 520, because it's not the same drive family.

you must find 520as's pcb board. i have it.if you couldn't find in italy i can help you..
you may also swap bios chip from patient to new one.

fzabkar writes thousands posts for about it.
i'm curious about why he doesn't now.

Because I have replied in the OP's other threads on the same subject.

viewtopic.php?t=30738&p=212886#p212886

In any case it would appear that the 520 PCB (100536501) may be identical to the 528 and 524 PCBs, but the OP's photos are not clear enough to make out the markings on the MCU and motor controller ICs.
