WD My Passport 1 TB Drive - Fails recognition in Windows

March 30th, 2015, 14:14

Hi,

Just joined this good forum.

I have a problem with my WD my passport 1 TB drive. (Model WD10JMVW 2060-771961-001 REV)

The drive suddenly stopped being recognized in Windows. The available space is shown as 0 bytes. The drive can not be accessed. Smartware status is - No smartware area found.

Following is status for the drive in Data Lifeguard when I run extended test,

Test Option: EXTENDED TEST
Model Number: WD My Passport 07A8
Unit Serial Number: WX31E63AJ340
Firmware Number: 1042
Capacity: 0.00 GB
SMART Status: Not Available
Test Result: PASS
Test Time: 23:29:37, March 30, 2015

This is USB 3.0 drive (And I think it has backward compatibility with USB 2.0).

I noticed, when I put the drive close to my ear that the drive tries to Spin up, makes 3 click noises and then spin downs.

Also, under windows Disk Management s/w, this drive somehow gets shown as an additional partition of 740 MB (Free Space) that I can use as new volume. But, I wonder if I use it as simple volume, with new drive letter, will I lose all the data as if the disk is formatted? I have more than 500 GB Data in this drive, mainly entertainment (Books, movies) but, some data is related to my projects that is essential for me.

Thank you all in advance for your kind help.

Warm Regards,

Ravi

most likely it is head problem,
if data is important to you, take it to a DR company around.
sorry not a DIY.

good luck.

Thank you all. Appreciate your time and help.

I know that I may need to forgo my data.

IS there any last ditch attempt in DIY category that I can try before a) going to DR company or b) trashing the drive?

With Warm Regards,

Ravi

+1 not DIY. And if you are willing to forgo the data, then it's not worth even the cost of donor parts to attempt it.
