Cheap alternative for a real cleanroom ?

April 8th, 2015, 18:03

Hello,

My name is Ed Bijman, originally graduated as engineer in mechanical enginering.
I am the type of person, who always want to know, exactly how things work and think this is the best place on earth, to meet people who are a little bit the same as me.

Right now, I know exactly, what I do not know and I know I need to learn a lot more then I know. I assume this is the best starting place for data recovery.

A couple of week ago, I decided that I want to learn actually everything about data recovery, from hard drives and memory chips (SSD) without moving parts.

I saw a couple of youtube movies made by DIYPerks, and want to know you opinion about this video:

I question, is this really a good idea ?

Bad idea.
Perform many of the works required for the transplant heads impossible.
For example, a viewing heads with a microscope.

Requires a large working area.
For tools and equipment.
To meet very specific actions.
On the weight of your hands will shake

Spend a lot of time and effort, and will not be able to use.

Better, but again little space.
The work is usually 5-10 orders.
Long proofread.
Where will you кееp open HDA and HSA?

good luck. This is where experience comes in. There are precious few manuals available for data Recovery. there are some manuals available for tools, but even these are often left wanting.

The way to learn in DR is by doing. You learn enough to start performing some kind of repair/recovery and build constantly on that. you start reading data sheets, you read forums like this one and attempt to cut through the bulldust to find small nuggets you can then build on. You spend LONG hours on the "simple" stuff learning the peculiarities of different devices. you ask questions, you verify the answers.

this field is somewhat unique as unlike medicine or auto mechanics, there are no manuals or courses or tuition that will cover the whole field. it changes often, but the old stuff IMHO is the bread and butter keeping your business afloat. you must be able to get through the old stuff.. (how are you going to learn all that as well as learn all the new stuff that seasoned DR Pro's also need to learn?) and you must also be able to figure out the new. new stuff I getting harder, SSD's have pretty small support in DR at the moment. the 4,6,8TB drives are presenting challenges to new DR ppl.. hard disk space at a DR company now is no trivial resource cost.
Time to get through recoveries on these big suckers is significant.

I guess my point is that you shouldn't use your time Collecting information to learn, you should be getting into it and getting some practical physical experience. getting some drives off ebay, playing around and seeing how your aptitude to this field is would be beneficial.

once again, good luck

Yes, the space is limited, but for a beginner, it's more than adequate to accommodate one patient and donor drive and their removed parts. It's about as much room as you get with $1,000+ SentryAir portable clean chambers. No need to have 5-10 drives on the bench at the same time at this early stage.

By the time a lot of space is required, one will have earned enough with something like my DIY clean chamber to buy a full-sized commercially-built unit. Sorry, I don't understand what "Long proofread" means.

Larry might be a spellchecker has changed from a mis-spelling of "Long preferred"

to do what?
To do commercial data recovery? It basically impossible to use, tiny work space, restricted movements it would be very time consuming and annoying which would inevitably lead to mistakes, like screwdriver slips and screw drops.

To open a drive to see what's inside? You don't need clean environment for that, canned air is enough.

PS: if you are to build one, build at least 3ft wide and 2ft high bench. I don't see much of a problem in building one, a clean bench is basically a very cheap terrarium/aquarium with a very expensive air filters and semi-expensive blower.

Thanks for all your answers :-) The alternative clean room looks very nice !

First I am going to build up some experience with all the defective hard drives I have in stock, from game consoles like ps3's. They range from 20GB to 500GB and have about 20-30 of them here. They all make repeating sounds, no sound at all, beginning of spinup sounds and none of them could be recognized by a pc.

Last week I had a customer with a 1TB Western Digital USB hard drive, who could not access most of his very important data, when he copied folders with important data, the hdd just stuck.

I copied all of his 600GB with the very handy freeware tool called "Roadkil's Unstoppable Copier", after that corrected lot of things with "chkdsk", executed program again and recovered all of his data to a new 1TB WD USB hard drive. Advised him to make a new backup of that disk, of the files, which he did not want to miss.

A surface scan, also hung at a certain point with red spots, when a good hdd shows only green spots.

Sorry for being off topic.

a good idea is to get some GOOD hard drives, and either disassemble and re-assemble and make sure they still work... and get some GOOD Hdds and look in terminal, save modules, rewrite firmwares etc..

trouble with working on faulty ones is that you may not know what you are doing, and results could be very close and you wouldn't know.. also the problems may not be able to be fixed so you spend time and waste it.

Thanks :-) I first will collect all my hard drives and devide them in good and bad ones.
