Need assistance with terminal locked Freeplay ST1000LM010

April 28th, 2015, 11:53

Guys,

I have the above mentioned drive in for recovery. The drive spins up with rapid clicking and does not spin down. Terminal shows the following output while it is rapidly clicking:

Rst 0x10M

RW: Disc Ctlr Initialization Completed.

FAIL Op=0165 Resp=0003
FAIL Op=0165 Resp=0005
FAIL Op=0165 Resp=0003
FAIL Op=0165 Resp=0005
FAIL Op=0165 Resp=0003
FAIL Op=0165 Resp=0005
FAIL Op=0165 Resp=0003
FAIL Op=0165 Resp=0005

After a few minutes the clicking stops and terminal quits giving above output however I cannot ctrl z into level T. After the rapid clicking stops I was able to access a few KB of sectors, but then the drive goes back to rapid clicking again. Shorting read channel helps reduce the time the drive takes to quit clicking, but it starts up again once you try to access any data.

My thinking is that the issue is with sector reallocations, but I can't get to terminal to turn that off. I also know that the timing of shorting the read channel plays a role in getting into terminal, but after probably 20 different attempts I see no difference in terminal output.

I would be happy to pay for any guidance or assistance.

Shawn

What instrument except the terminal do you have?
You must to disable in the ROM all heads except H0.
Then turn the rest into RAM and check them out.

My betting is a duff head in there. But to confirm this, do as Tomset says.

I had already switched out the heads with a donor set. Donor heads produced same behavior as original heads and patient heads worked fine on donor drive.

As far as editing head map in ROM...my tools don't seem to support that.

I guess I will have to refer the job on to someone else. Thanks guys for taking the time to reply.
