Some of you may already have heard about my misfortunes with WD, so now I'd like to ask about another deceased/patient, which on and off worked alright with three others HDD's as a home media in a well-aired Zalman case. Almost a week ago I noticed often freezes while watching HD TV, at first I thought it was a server caching or WiFi, but when the freezes began to popout as Jack-from-the-box, I did check SMART and yes...

I know how to reset SMART/clean lists and would like to cut some 'temporary' working space, yet the problem is the err blocks are scattered over the disk, not isolated in some location...

Worth trying or a 'Hello Recycle Bin and expensive magnets'?

Ok, it seems to be a bit hard.
Then possibly a simpler question: if MHDD extended info says the HDD has interface problem (returns something like 1010101010101010), then it's "finish him" or there's still something to check?

Hi there, guys.

All in all, I decided to format the HDD as NTFS 64KB-cluster and chkdsk it via Win8 upgraded FS bad-blocks marking. As far as the process went rather slowly I turned off the screen and went to bed, but in the morning I found out that PC somehow turned off.
When I turned it on, it appeared that HDD is a "generic IDE" of 0GB size...

That's why I would like to know how to restore its size or something.
Makes sense to play with it or not?

Perhaps I should be more specific: as far as I understand the SA was compromised, so I would need a translator.

1) where one could find one? (in WDMarvel it's file "35")
2) what else one may need to restore the HDD size and accessibility?
Don't worry--I have no sensible info there and I won't cry too much if it completely dies, so it's more like gambling and education how it works.

You killed the heads running chkdisk on a failing drive. If you were trying recover the data you should have run ddrescue to clone around the bad sectors. If you're just trying to refurbish it then you should have run self-scan. Now it's time for the scrap bin, unless you need data off it and want to pay for pro services.

Sorry for possible necroposting, yet I was checking up a pile of old faulty hardware and found the subject, so I decided to give it another go--at least for education purpose.

The device spins-up and seems to calibrate properly with no strange sounds.
If it's plugged-in at startup, the BIOS hangs auto-detecting for quite a while and then says "unknown device"; no reaction in Win8.1 though.
WDMarvel 4beta shows:

That allegedly implies, the SA/firmware was damaged while resetting SMART or alike, not (only) heads.

I was lucky enough to find some relative firmware at HddGuru), the only problem is it's for PC3000--in .PCR format whereas WDM requires .ROM, right? Ok, I do understand possible risks, so I would like to ask whether it's possible to somehow convert Modules/ROM/Tracks?
Perhaps, one already has got raw files for WDMarvel?

I know you're talking--the HDD was getting worser, I tried to security-erase and localize errs, then decided to reset SMART and have several 'good' partitions, however the device kept self-monitoring and remapping, so I repeated the procedure (may be not so properly) and thought about Win8.1 chkdsk soft-bad remapping too... Now it is 'NаТx Disk size 0 - 0Gb', which can read neither ROMs, nor SA-list

As far as I understood, my latest fault was having tweaked in WDM, I didn't turn off the HDD before scanning the surface errs, alas.


Ok, at the moment I've got only WDMarvel among the software to work with ROMs, because I don't know other free/trial counterparts.
Although WD states some features to download/upgrade F/W, I couldn't find any--neither flasher, nor firmware itself. Indeed, they are not for home users because it's rather easy to kill the device, but it's already a zombie, so no harm implied.

For now I would like to 'reset' the HDD status to its defaults, so I could experiment, retry and learn from it a bit more. Why, there're still some 750GB good space, providing it's stable, it still can serve a little for I need no speeding from 'Green'.
However, are there any WD flasher or something similar, I wonder?
