PCB damage as shown. I've ordered a replacement board, and i'm 98% sure, but i thought i'd ask anyway, the U12 chip is the one i transplant right?

Does anyone know if the motor/heads might be damaged from this?

The damage is on the motor side, most likely due to an overvoltage on the 12V supply, in which case the preamp will probably have been untouched. Measure the resistances between the motor terminals just to be sure.

Resistances came up normal. *breathes sign of relief*

My meter is +/- 0.1 accurate cuz i'm cheap..

Solder job went okay.

Plugged drive in, it started spinning unlike before then...

click, click, click, click, click, power down. The entire time the BSY registry was turned on.

I guess this means the heads or pre-amp is destroyed?

I guess i should also tell the customer to get a new psu or surge protector board. :S

I have no idea what's going on with my pictures.

PC3K support had a look at it. Tried some different head map configurations, then some different utilities, then a custom loader..

Final diagnosis is head failure or media damage.

Case closed!
