WD Raptor 74Gb

July 27th, 2015, 14:26

Ok, so Ive basically signed in here to see if someone can pitch some ideas (if there are any) for my.... what I guess is dead Raptor HDD.
Its a few years old however I've had it lying around here without touching it, the error has been going on for all this time and appeared out of the blue one day where It simply wouldnt be read in BIOS or in windows (on another computer)
The disc spins and vibrates, howerver the "arm" aint trying to read the discs, if I shake the HDD hard enough I can hear it click, and then return to the starting position.

Can anything be done at all with this HDD, or is it completely dead? I've read people puting it in the freezer (which IMO sounds completely....off, to be nice) to switching boards and stuff.

Shaking it wasn't a good idea, and putting it in the freezer is a even worse one :-(

I very much doubt anything DIY can be done with this, so if you don't need the data then trash the drive and move on.....

Sorry to say, but it's the truth :-(

Well, I shook it hoping it would make it somehow remember positioning or whatever, I had read that a few people tapped it on the side and such to have it working again (to do backup ofc)

Well, atleast then I know, dont remember if I had anything important on the HDD, would've been fun though to jump back 7-8 years in time to see what I had saved :)

Lot's of Raptors had firmware issues, as said shaking it around is not a good idea
If you need to get the data, please feel free to contact me.
