Toshiba MK3259GSXP failed to initate - Possibly ATA password

October 19th, 2015, 8:03

Forementioned disk: Toshiba MK3259GSXP 320GB taken out of TANDBERG DATA RDX quikstor

After connecting hard drive to a computer it fails to initiate both in Windows and via Boot CD's.
It returns "I/O Error".

HDDScan says the drive is ATA Password Protected.
Diagnostic tools fail to recognize the drive (e.g. MHDD) or are unable to ckeck it and usualy give out "I/O or Read error" I used the following programs:
DiskGenius, Partition Magic Pro, Fujitsu Diagnostic Tool, HDAT, chkdsk, DiskCheck and a few more.

Only LifeGuard Diagnostic from Western Digital tested the drive with successfull result but it says the drive is 0 bytes.
_

after searching through Google i tried the following to disable the protection:
- Formatting the drive using: Active KillDisk, Darik’s BOOT and Nuke, HDDErase, HDShredder, LifeGuard Diagnostics, GParted, HDD Low level Format Tool, fdisk. There was even a try on unsing Windows 7 installation disk)
- Clearing the attributes in "CMD/DISKPART"

HD has no pins which could be used to physically lock it.

I tried yelling at the drive, changing drivers. I even searched for firmware update (I failed).

Nothing helps.
Maybe you guys have another idea because I'm lost?

Best regards.

you don't say anything about the history of it. Possibly has media damage and/or head issues and is just not in good condition. there is some software written by a forum member, Moltke. It is called "ZU" I believe. I have never used it but may be worth a look. Otherwise a dr pro might be able to do it at a reasonable price with their firmware tools (if that's whats required)

"ZU" doesn't work on my computer.
The drive is pulled out of RDX QUIKSTOR (by TANDBERG DATA) where it does work.

Thank you for your reply.

I doubt that you need the data, so... ?

I'm trying to make the disk work again.

? *edit* sorry I missed this part about the RDX in the original post... This is quite important info :-)

These have different firmware, and I don't think I've seen any reports of them being enabled to use as a regular drive.

I am sure there is a thread on here from some time ago talking about these. One of my servers came with a backup solution and a heap of these RD1000 cartridges and I assumed I could rip the HDDs out. at the time I didn't find a solution and lost interest. maybe do a search on here for RDX

this post mentions RDX, though I don't know how much of it is relevant or if there was a solution http://forum.hddguru.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=8374&p=185385&hilit=RDX#p185385

Thank you very much. You've been very helpful with this!

It appears to be impossible to unlock this drive though.
I'll post here if I find a solution.

Cheers!

ZU is a DOS tool. You need to boot to real DOS. You cannot run ZU in a Windows DOS box, if that is what you are trying to do.

Yeah, I figured it out. ;)
Rushed my reply a bit.

I will try to do things all of you mentioned.
I searched the web before and I didn't found them so you've been a great help.
