Samsung - PCB Repair [ BF41-000178B 320GB HD322HJ ]

October 30th, 2015, 6:04

Hello everyone ,
I Have a PCB At Hand of a Samsung 320GB SATA 3.5" Desktop Drive .This Has Come To Me From The Customer After Passing Hands Of Other Company .When i Received The Case I Did Not See Any Physical Burnt PCB [ Other Then The 5 Volts ZERO Ohm Resistor Not Installed ] . I Installed The ZERO Ohm Resistor And Then Checked Both The TVS Diodes [ Seemed Fine ] . I Then Fired Up The PCB With a Standalone Power Supply And i Noticed That The Cables Of The Power Supply Got Hot [ Did Not Check Which One 12 Volts Or 5 Volts ] .Please Find The Photo of The Same .

Image

I Have Now Removed Both The TVS Diodes And Both Are OK Outside PCB ,5 Volts To Ground is 2.4K Ohms ,12 Volts To Ground Is In K And M Ohms .Fusable ZERO Ohm Resistor Still Is Fine .In The Motor Section There is a Diode [ Seems Fine Infinite at One Side And 0.1 Voltage Drop At One Side ] ,Also There Seems a 8 Legged Mosfet 4496 The Diode check in Source/Drain Is Fine But i Could Not Test The Mosfet Trigger / Activation .Photo is Here .

Image

This is The Photo Of The Complete PCB .The Only Two IC On Top Are BGA Variant Of MCU And The Motor Controller .Now if All The Other Components Are OK IMHO .Shall i Change Motor Controller And Try PCB Once .I Have a Same MCU/Motor Controller PCB Of Same Family HDD But PCB Numbers Are Different .Both Seem To Be Trinity_ID .

Image

PS : I Do Not Remember if The Motor Controller Got Hot [ Faintly i Think it Did And Was Hot ]

Why do you think the pcb is bad to start with ? Does it produce a log ?
If the drive doesn't spin at all it doesn't necessarly be a pcb issue.
On most samsung if pre-amp is not detected drive will not spin.
Same as for puis issues...
Etc, etc...

Spildit ,
The First Issue is Getting The PCB OK .Its Shorting And Making Power Supply Wires HOT .If i Can Solve It Then Only i Can Extract ROM [ Inside That BGA MCU ] . This is a DR Case .Well Many Times We Can Get Replacement PCB And Then Try Few ROMS's .But The Excitement Goes Away

Check guide on my forum - tutorials - samsung.
Faster and safer to use donor pcb rather then attempting to fix the damaged one.

Sir ,
Can You Provide Me The Link To That ,Should Be a Great Read ...As Always

Hello Everyone ,
The Old engineer Strikes Back  .The Case Is Solved 100% .I Carefully Inspected a Similiar PCB [ Different Part No ] For a Same Motor Controller .Desoldering The QFP Motor Controller From Donor Board To Patient .Changed 8 Pin Mosfet + Diode And Both TVS .Fired Up The PCB And Felt The MCU [ Looked Pretty Hot To Me ] . Thought MCU is Also Shorted In This [ Then I Felt The MCU For a Long Time And Noticed Its Not That Hot Like a Short/Dead Short Component ] . Installed It On The HDA And woila Magic .
