250gb to 500gb back to 250gb? How?

October 30th, 2015, 21:05

Hello there mate,

I have Backup my 250gb to my 500gb via Sata Cloner. all went fine,

but after backup 3 months the 250gb (source) crash.

I Like to write the Backup from 500gb to my spare 250gb Hardisk.

It is possible? Anyone how to do it?

thanks

If it's just files, you could just copy them instead of use cloning. If there are files with certain flags and/or metadata (like a Windows installation) that you need to preserve, there are applications that can handle that even with file-by-file.

Sector-by-sector cloning isn't possible if the source is larger than the target. In that case (AFAIK) you need to defragment and partition the drive to less or equal the size of the target first. More competent cloning applications should be able to handle that automatically if you can't do it yourself.

You can use free Farstone Drive Clone or Easeus TODO Backup to copy a 500GB to a 250GB drive. It will work if you don't have more than 250GB of data to copy of course.

Have a look at your 500gb backup drive and see if your data is as an image file or a 250gb partition. If it is one of the two you could use Dmde to write an image or a complete partition back to the replacement 250gb drive.
If the data partion is really 500gb in size then you could use a copy utility with a resize capability. I still use my old Norton Ghost for many cases such as this one.
