Not Bios recog. Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500 GB - FW: CC45

Hello folks,

first the HDD was BIOS recog. after a restart of the computer it was not recog. anymore. No spinning up - completely silent.
Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500 GB - FW: CC45

bsy bug?
corroded contacts? -- attachment

any DIY recommendations? RS232 TTL adapter I have.. already reanimated 2 Seagate HDDs with that. But in that case I won't do anything wrong.

If it's not spinning at all and silent then the PCB would be the first starting point.

First check the TVS top left of the PCB, if that's OK then get a new PCB of same P/N and you MUST swap the 8-pin "ROM" chip top left. Careful though, if you damage that you're in BIG trouble!

That TVS is driving me crazy... i have to put very much pressure on a specific point with the COM (black) cable to get 0 OHM. Next time I try it pressure doesn't help... next time I get 0 Ohm again...

I'm only at the beginning to check a Diode correctly.. any recommendations?

Yes, BenDataRecovery stop doing DataRecovery for clients untill you have way more knowledge
Don't gamble with your clients data.

Splidit... I see no point in your comment. But maybe you could show me the steps I do mistakes in your view so I can be a better "gambler" in your terminology.

So far there are no indicators for me that this is a mechanical issue.. / it seems to be the TVS as prescribed above... Honestly I do not have the full knowledge... but as long as I don't open the drive and do nothing besides measuring I don't think I can do any harm.

In many cases I send the requests to a partner or to Ontrack. It depends on various factors.

Acutally I need help in that case here... the 5 V TVS is high-ohmig in both directions. above 130 k in the direction I meassured it (see the picture above)... an 65 k in the other direction

Wouldn't it be dangerouse to use the same procedure for a 7200.11 drive on a 7200.12 drive die to the Non-Resident G-List issue ?

Answer: Not always, it's danger only if NRG is filled with some entries, if is empty it's ok to regen translators (m0,2,2,,,,,22).
You may check if NRG is empty with V40 command.

Can I do any harm when I short circuit the Reading Points in the picture and get terminal access.. when NRG is empty can i regen translators?

measuring 100 ohm in the read cirucit - and 50 ohm in the write circuit... so the points should be the right ones? Just double-checked it and compared it to the pictures in the hdd-oracle thread.

I would say check every possibilities and not fully try every possible step by yourself... You now the "data rec business" is very hard.. and it is not easy to find a way between spending 3000 € for a RAID recovery and the money the customer could afford and is willing to aford for that...
There is a difference between try everything and check everything...

For me it is important that wen someone has a problem to contribute to that problem. I'm the last one who is not wiling to pay for support.

At this point I want to express my gratitude to Sean / pcimage england who helped me a lot in that case and offered me his professional help with the ROM Swap thing. He made a big contribution by offering me his support without demanding money for initial consultation. I almost insisted him giving something for that. Because he gave me 30 minutes of his time. Instead I wrote a Google Review.

The attitude of helping each other and share knowledge and information is so important. Sharing knowledge means for sure giving money for that in exchange. Everything has to be fair in exchange... everyone has to live...

It seems for me such a big fight gaining knowledge without paying money for beeing in the elite PC3000 circle. And almost forced to upgrade it every I don't now...

All the information I get from others and you in this forum will help (and already helped) to know what I can and what I can't do in the field of data recovery. My task is to be like a pioneer and find ways to help my customers in the interest of price , quality and speed. These factors should have a balance in the interest of my customers and my company. Maybe my direct form seems a little bit harsh... I'm curious like a little child. Asking many "perhaps stupid" (could be annoying or misunderstood) questions.

The "m" command in the 7200.11 fix should not be applied to 7200.12 models. It results in partial LBA access due to a failure to account for a non-resident G-list. Apparently the fix works provided that the NRG-list is empty, but fails otherwise. That's why some "professionals" have reported success in the past.

If you do the m command on the 7200.12 drive and the drive have entries on Non-Resident G-List you will end up with partial access only, or so to say you will be able to read/verify only up untill the first sector that was present on the non-resident G-List.
