Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

I have deleted a video file on my iMac.
I have since downloaded a recovery software and ran. Which I now know was a no no..
The file is about 350Gig.
When I ran recovery everything else but this file came up. (Even files from 2005. I brought this Mac new it 2010)
Anyways.
I have since taken to computer doc and he is cloning the drive.
He has said that it may be a broken file now and part of it may be overwritten.
The file is a .mov
Two questions.
What's the best way to recover what's left of the broken file.
Why didn't the Mac delete older files 1st.

Hi, don't run the recovery program on the same drive that you recover data from. If you have access to another Mac you can put the drive in as a slave drive and run R-Studio or Datarescue 4 on it, and get your file.
If you only have access to a pc there's a version of R-studio for that as well.

mr_spokk, I have have a look at R-Studio.
How do I work it.
What would be the best code to write to find my files?
My coding level is: I can't write code and can only just understand it.
