Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

Not sure if anyone has a clue about this drive from 1993(!): WDAC2250-00F
But drive spins up, shows ready (on PC3K). There's no clicking, but shows 0MB.
In clean room, can see 3 of the 4 platter surfaces which appear
intake. Heads are LARGE and all 3 are present. Also filter is clean.
SA Structure Test is passed okay.
Modules are read okay too.
No such thing as S.M.A.R.T. in 1993..
I'm thinking this needs a heads transplant. But where to find such an old Donor?
Anybody want to add to this? Or concur?
Thanks!!

you were able to backup the SA ?

Lesson learned!
Such an old drive like this ONLY works properly with a 40-pin IDE cable!
-the 80-pin IDE cable won't work; maybe someone here knows why
and could enter it below, for completeness.
Problem solved, went from 0MB to 255MB

http://www.wdc.com/en/products/legacy/Legacy.asp?r=3ISTM that your tool was calculating the capacity by referring to those Identify Device words that report the number of sectors in LBA mode. In fact this old model uses CHS addressing and predates LBA mode.
The difference in the 80-pin and 40-pin cables is in the /PDIAG/CBLID signal (pin #34).
http://www.ele.uri.edu/courses/ele408/s ... de/IDE.pdfThis signal (PDIAG) shall be asserted by Drive 1 to indicate to Drive 0 that it has completed diagnostics.
http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/if/ide/c ... e80-c.htmlSince the [80-conductor] cable is mandatory for high-speed modes, the system has to have some way of knowing it is installed. This is done by having the /PDIAG:/CBLID signal, carried on pin #34 of the interface, grounded in the connector that attaches to the motherboard. Since the older 40-conductor cable would not have this pin grounded, by looking for the grounding on this pin at startup the host can determine if the 80-conductor cable is installed.
