Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

I have a Hitachi hard drive (5k320-160) from a Toshiba Satellite Pro S300M-EZ2402.
The owner is actually the daughter of my landlord from many years ago. I've known the landlord, the landlord's wife, and now the daughter, they're all very nice, and I'd like to help out but don't know if I can.
The notebook won't post. LED's indicate no power, the AC adapter tests good.
She wanted the data, so pulled the drive and connected it to a USB adapter. Hard drive wasn't properly recognized.
Put it into a machine where I have MHDD and MHDD is saying hard drive is locked with a password.
She gives me three possible passwords and I try them in several permutations (padding to 32 characters, upper first-case letter, etc.). Nothing works.
Her husband tells me that if the hard drive is installed into the Toshiba notebook (if it were working), it just boots right up.
Anything I can accomplish with MHDD?
Thanks.

Not without the correct password no.
You could try "ZU" but I don't know if it supports your model, I don't use it.
Failing that you'll need someone with a firmware tool like PC3000

ZU should help.

Well the husband picked up the machine and said he'd order another Toshiba on eBay and try that.
So I guess I don't need help after all.
I'm hoping he will be back, I'd be interested in trying the ZU tool. In fact, I might lock a drive and see if I can get it unlocked.
Thanks for the feedback.
Happy new year everyone.
