Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

The HDD was dropped.
After inspection, the heads were found broken and replaced.
The drive now IDs, but when trying to image, it stops after 128sectors image. From any range it is tried, result is same, under selective head image, result is same. Copy0 has crc error on key modules 31,32,33 etc, but all the modules of copy1 is just fine.
My suspect is the platters are required to SWAP as well. But problem is that - the drive has 2 platters, and one slider or "known as spacer" between the platters
How do you exchange platters on such drives?
Any advice is highly appreciated

Hi SHAHI,
you might try a hotswap with a matching donor that has all the good modules in copy0 + copy1 or you can try to fix the modules with bad CRC. I would not swap any platters if there is no problem with the motor.
best regards,
pcn

Why would you want to swap the platters?
Well.. Don't.
The problem with your drive is elsewhere. It seems to have SA problems that need to be fixed, or the heads are weak.

Well, I had a case about few months ago Dropped WD Passport.
The case had exactly similar behavior like this one.
After the HSA swap, the drive would ID, SA area was accessible without any error, but during image it had similar behaviour. Later after swapping platters, the case was resolved. That's why was thinking of this one to swap platters.
Copy1 reads fine without any error. Copy0 produces errors in key modules as I explained.
I tried to rewrite Copy0, borrowed from Copy1, but after scan, Copy0 produces still error.

I'd try another head swap, myself, and shift modules in Copy0 before re-writing from Copy1.

Ive original backup of the ressources. Im trying to shift module location. Hotswap or hsa swap Is not possible as the drive Is rare.

Make sure to run solve slow responding problem via ABA on both copy 0 and copy 1 separately. Also try ram head map editing to 1,1,1,1,1,1 (or whatever equivalent for copy 1 is on your drive... 3,3,3,3,3,3?) then soft reset and get it to ID, then change map back to default without resetting and try and image.
Btw, heads should be easy to get for this drive, they are quite compatible drives...

Shahi ,
Try To Handle it Like The Following
1 : Disable SA Access to Copy 1 [ By Changing start sector of that aba range ]
PS : This will disable total access to SA copy 1
2 : Then Restart HDD Then HDD Will/Should Read Only SA0
3 : Make Backup Of ROM + ROM Modules + Copy 0 of SA
4 : Apply Slow Fix [ Using ABA On Copy 0 Only ]
5 : Restart Drive And Try See If User Data Is Accessable
if Not
1 : Backup Translator Module From Copy 0
2 : Clear Translator And Regenerate to Copy 0
if Not
1 : Try To Do An Average of Microjogs in ROM And See if Situation Improves
if Not
1 : Take a %^$%^$ Hammer And Ham It

What I tried so far...
Tried to SHIFT MODULE of COPY0, failed. Copy 0 has bad sectors to the key modules, I tried to write 00 in specific range, write failed. I think, Surface 0 has developed some scratch in SA, that's why it's behaving like this one.
Only option is trying to boot the HDD from Copy1 and see

All the process tried, at this stage, I think smart hotswap may help. Problem is managing donor. Which is being just too much difficult.
Do you have any idea about compatible donor from any Blue Series for another HSA swap (if required) + smart hot swap
